At XanderLyn Salon in Scottsdale, our mission is to create and maintain a culture that upholds the science of beauty, adhere to creativity and innovation, and support collaboration. To make this happen, education is directly at the forefront of our salon.
Education and technology is key in our modern-world, but especially in the salon industry! It seems that scientific breakthroughs are at an all time high! Which once was good for the hair is no longer. In addition, things that were bad for the hair are now good! How do we ever keep on these new findings? Simply put, the answer is education!! When it comes to hair, it is extremely important to understand:
- The composition of hair and what impacts it. Without understanding the composition of hair, it’s nearly impossible to properly prescribe the best hair care and styling regimen that suits our clients needs. Our owner, Gaby Miley, has been an international salon educator for 14 years. She has actually taught thousands of fellow hair stylists the “what”, “why” and “how” behind hair. The foundation of the hair strand itself is one of the most important things for every hairdresser to know and understand.
- Client history, but not to be confused with a typical stylist client consultation. We are talking about legitimate client history. In today’s world, we have many parts of our daily regimen that can affect our hair and scalp. For example, medications, supplements, dietary preferences, exercise routines and environmental elements may influence our body, including hair and scalp! Our history also determines how our hair follicles grow. At XanderLyn, we commonly see two people with the same hair color and texture, but similar products affect them differently. This is one example of how a client’s history is crucial.
- Science behind products. Packaging is often an attention-grabber. Next, we are captivated by smell and touch. However, the material, scents and feelings aren’t necessarily inline with the science of the hair products. Here’s the reality to this:If it smells good, great! But sometimes the best products don’t have a smell, or the fragrance is understated. If it feels soft and silky, great! But did you know that sometimes this is a bad feeling? Too much of a good feeling could mean a serious breakup down the road, so you want to avoid products that build up and coat the hair. Overtime these “feel-so-good” products don’t actually allow the nourishment that the hair needs.

What’s great mean? I’m glad you asked! When purchasing these products, it’s important that you get your prescription from your hairdresser! They KNOW your fabric!!! Think about this, can you properly diagnose yourself if you are sick? No, we go to the doctor. It’s the same thing with your hairdresser – they are your hair doctor!
- pH….pH….pH!! One of the most important aspects of every shampoo and conditioner that you use! If the pH is off, your hair and scalp are suffering!!!
- Is your hair distressed?? Color treated, bleached, permed, relaxed, chemically challenged? Is your hair mechanically challenged? Flat ironed, stretched dryer, round brush dryer…. curling irons, hot rollers, wands and and and!!! YES!! It’s compromised which leads to distress!!! Oh wait…. are you out in the sun, playing golf, taking a walk??? Yep…. it’s distressed! Sorry! What fixes distressed, compromised hair?? Protein (oh yes it does!!!) and some moisture! You want a Haircare regimen that is not only pH balanced, your Haircare regimen should be able to work from the inside of the hair, the cortex, to the outer layers of the hair, the cuticle!
At our Scottsdale salon, we only carry haircare regimens that are GREAT!!! Scientifically proven and something for every clients history!! If you can find it in the drug store, grocery store or big beauty warehouses, though maybe it’s “great” but it has not been prescribed! We take pride in our services…. and our services don’t end when you walk out the door… we make sure you have the best!

Gabby was a thoughtful soul, and I was always struck by the depth of her insights and the richness of her experiences. We learned from each other, and I always looked forward to those moments with her. Gabby, you are deeply missed. You left an indelible mark on our Xamily, and your spirit will stay with us for years to come. I will always carry the sound of your laughter, the brightness of your smile, and the warmth of your heart with me. Until we meet again—thank you for being you.
