It’s taken me months to find the words to write this. From the moment I learned of her passing, the shock was overwhelming—and honestly, it still hasn’t fully settled. I know I’m not alone in that feeling. Losing someone so beautiful, so kind, and so full of life at such a young age is beyond comprehension.

Every time I walk into the salon, I still feel the echoes of her presence—her warmth, her kindness, her light. She was a shining star in our lives, and her absence has left a space that can never truly be filled.

I remember the way she would look at me when I told a bad dad joke—rolling her eyes, maybe, but always laughing. She appreciated the effort, and I appreciated that about her. I remember our long text conversations about her career, her dreams, and the things she was working through. I’d offer little pieces of advice, and it meant so much to see her take them to heart.

We shared deep conversations in the break room and on the salon floor—about life, purpose, beliefs. Gabby was a thoughtful soul, and I was always struck by the depth of her insights and the richness of her experiences. We learned from each other, and I always looked forward to those moments with her.

Gabby, you are deeply missed. You left an indelible mark on our Xamily, and your spirit will stay with us for years to come. I will always carry the sound of your laughter, the brightness of your smile, and the warmth of your heart with me. Until we meet again—thank you for being you.

The Family a.k.a. Xamily

The Xamily

When Gaby and I started the process of creating a unique and welcoming salon environment back in 2015, we wanted to give it a family feel, rather than a bunch of people renting a space together. This is where the term XAMILY was born. Originally, Gaby was tired of the restrictions put on her by her then salon, where she could only go in to the salon on certain days and only at specified times. She was then very fully committed to traveling the world with Redken, training the trainer and teaching color techniques all over the world. She would have to strategically schedule her clients on the times when she was in town and the limitations put on to her by her salon at the time were less than accommodating.

In March 2015, we decided to build and open up what we affectionately refer to as XanderLyn ONE. It was a 600 square foot space in old-town Scottsdale and was perfect for Elizabeth (the first member of the Xamily) and Gaby to get away from where they currently working, saving some money and at the same time having a 24/7 flexibility in their schedules. The opening was great. There were 5 stations and Gaby and Elizabeth welcomed their clients with open arms and the clients immediately fell in love with the intimacy and to be honest the QUIET of the new salon. It wasn't long, however, before others wanted to be part of the experience.

Later that year, the Xamily put together the original FIVE, all of whom are still at the salon today: Gaby, Elizabeth, Andrea, Farrah and Josh. Five stations, five stylists, all working together as opposed to some other booth rental salons, where working side-by-side can be more competition and less cooperation. If someone was sick or needed time away to take care of one their kids, one of the others would immediately step in to help and there was never any fear of that person stealing their client. They all shared their combined education and knowledge and they all strived to make each of them better and more expert in their craft.

Of course, something this amazing doesn't stay quiet in the industry for long. The Xamily was growing and it was once again time to expand - thus, XanderLyn TWO was born, which was two and one-half times larger and now had nine stations and an esthetician room. We added Tiffany, Joey, Jamie, Jeffrey, Leslee, Vanessa, Heather and Alex to our Xamily and business was great! We really started to diversify our retail lines, so the customers would have a greater choice in what they could use for their hair. We were in a prime location on a fairly busy corner, but we still had the intimacy and coziness of a small salon. What didn't change is our concept of Xamily. Often, booth rental salons will advertise CHAIR FOR RENT and will basically take anyone who can pay the monthly fee. Gaby has always prided herself on making sure that anyone and everyone who joins the Xamily is a good fit for the team, not just someone leasing a space. The interview process is pretty intense and everyone in the salon has a voice when it comes to who we will bring in next. I can always tell when someone is a good fit because you can feel an intense buzz and positive energy in the air.

XanderLyn TWO was great and we even tried for a while to bring XanderLyn ONE back, but issues with parking and having a salon in an older building started to take a toll on us. January 2020 came and we found the new space that we are currently in. Updated building, great parking, easy access location and now 12 stations and a beauty room. We added even more amazing stylists to our team, some from XanderLyn TWO moving on and the new ones coming in. I should note that the ones that did move on, many we still consider part of our Xamily including Jeffrey, Joey and Alex and they are some of our closest allies. They just found their destinies in other places (even Alex moving back to New Jersey) and we could not be happier for them. At our new location, we added Gabby, Anna, Kandi, Kenzie and Niki, all of whom were immediately embraced by the Xamily and have all expressed their love for their new home.

We LOVE LOVE LOVE our Xamily and it will continue to grow, but only with those people that actually feel like part of our family and those that feel XanderLyn is their home.

XanderLyn and Covid

So it's been over a year in the new salon location, and it definitely feels like home! We are so excited to have 13 stylists currently working at XanderLyn Salon and we are still growing. It was not an easy year 2020 for anyone and XanderLyn was no exception. We decided to move at all possible times in January of 2020 and then all of sudden, the world fell apart. We were actually forced to close due to the state-enforced mandate for a good part of April. We ended up having the new location up and running the Tuesday after Memorial Day and we were excited for the task at hand, but were still unsure about the state of our country and where all of this was leading. I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of our customers and clients for being there and being supportive of us every step of the way! All of you are what brought stability and hope to our industry where businesses were closing around us left and right and we were not quite sure when the debacle would end. Thank you for being supportive with wearing masks and waiting a little extra longer sometimes for the start of an appointment when we wanted to make sure that everything was as disinfected as it could be to ensure the safety of you, your families and the sylists. We were all in this together and we consider every client to be a part of our family, or as we call it our "Xamily".

We are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as summer begins to wane. We are still keeping up with our strict cleaning protocols, but now the masks are optional and we can move more freely around the salon. Remember, we are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, so if at any point you want to try to book an appointment with your stylist when the salon might be a little less crowded, you can sometimes arrange a time with them earlier in the morning, later in the evening or on a less busy day. We make sure that all of our stylists can set their own hours because we realize they have important things outside of work including kids, husbands, and basically LIFE. This is one of the reasons I believe XanderLyn is set above some of the other salons because we firmly believe in the work-life balance.

You may have noticed all the different brands of hair products we carry at XanderLyn. You will also notice that our backbar (where you get your hair shampooed or treated) has many of the products you see on the shelves. Always feel free to ask your stylist about products that you might be curious about and they may be able to give you a try during your salon visit to see if is something that may benefit you in the salon or at home. Soon, we will be unveiling a brand new technology that actually will scan your hair and suggest what products may be useful or beneficial to your hair - but that is a subject for another blog post.

XanderLyn Hair Salon and Beauty Lounge was built upon the strong foundation of freedom and art and that bureaucracy does not belong in the salon atmosphere. Gaby Miley, the brains behind the XanderLyn name, is a distinguished industry leader, salon owner, current Keune International Educator, and prior Redken Global Educator. She has traveled to 22 countries educating professionals, creating red-carpet styles, and supporting the beauty industry. There is no denying Gaby knows the industry, and Gaby believed that many salons prioritize structure opposed to creating art.

With a firm belief that hair stylists should have the ability to work any day they desire – even Sunday or Monday, when most salons are closed, and have the opportunity to service clients at any time they choose– even before the typical work day begins or after hours, Gaby originally set out to open a small salon solely for her devoted clientele. However, soon fellow beauty artists and respected peers caught on to Gaby’s idea. The more it was discussed, the more people realized Gaby was starting something exceptional.

By maintaining her ideology and following her passions, coupled with her extensive expertise, it was believed that Gaby would quickly conquer the beauty industry. At first, the idea turned reality was a five-chair salon in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. By creating a chic yet welcoming environment and employing an exclusive team of beauty influencers, the demand for XanderLyn quickly increased. To meet the requests of consumers, the salon moved (a few doors down) to a larger location, now offering 14 hair stations and a beauty treatment room.

By Definition

XanderLyn, owned by Gaby Miley, is a high energy, full service hair salon and beauty lounge located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. The name ‘XanderLyn” is derived from the names of Gaby’s children, Alexander and Madeline. This portrays Gaby’s deep commitment to creating and supporting a family environment at XanderLyn, one which is has set new industry standards.

The Beginning…

Gaby’s modern beliefs on hair salon operations surpassed most traditional viewpoints. For example, she believed that hair stylists should have the freedom to work any day they desire – even Sunday or Monday when most salons were closed, and have the opportunity to service clients at any time they choose, not only from 9am – 5pm. So Gaby set out to open a small salon for her devoted clientele. As an industry renowned leader, respected colleagues immediately realized Gaby was starting something exceptional. By maintaining her ideology and following her passions, coupled with her extensive expertise, it was believed that Gaby would quickly conquer the beauty industry. At first, the idea turned reality was a five-chair salon in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. By creating a chic yet welcoming environment and employing an exclusive team of beauty influencers, the demand for XanderLyn quickly increased. To meet the requests of consumers, the salon moved (a few doors down) to a larger location, now offering 14 hair stations and a beauty treatment room. The original 5-chair salon was renovated into the XanderLyn Beauty Lounge.

We asked Vanessa what her go-to look was this season, for makeup clients coming to her to achieve their own A-lister look. Vanessa shares, “A glowing and dewy face is all the rage. This is the time to get your summer glow started. It’s also the perfect season to spend less time on makeup so you can have more time at pool soirees and spring bashes.” To achieve the perfect glowing and dewy look, Vanessa suggests focusing bronzer, lip gloss and eyelash extensions.

Bronzer – Used to add warmth and dimension to your face. Bronzer is all about making the skin look healthier.

Lip Gloss – Gives lips a glossy lustre and may add a subtle color.

Eyelash Extensions – Used to enhance the length, curliness fullness, and thickness of natural eyelashes. The extensions may be made from several materials including mink, synthetic, or horse hair. The main method of applying the extensions on is by using an adhesive glue to individually sticking them to the eyelashes one-by-one. This is to prevent the eyelashes from sticking together.

3. Shaved-In Parts – Men are looking fashion-forward in 2018. And while manscaping took a little time to refine itself into a true art, shaved-in parts are so on trend.

4. Vivid Mermaid Hair – Rainbow Hair is the color statement that has taken the world by storm! Gone are the days of playing it safe with hair color, the bolder and brighter the better. It’s all about vivid hair color, from cotton candy pink to sea foam green and sky blue!

More About Joey

Joey Hervey was born in Phoenix, AZ., but his electrifying career would allow him to live in many places, including Beverly Hills, Washington D.C. and Spain. When Joey was young, he loved accompanying his mom to the beauty salon. He adored it all – from the smell of the hair products to the vibe of being inside a salon. He specifically recalls a stylist wearing bell bottoms, a silk shirt open to his navel and a slew of gold chains around his neck. Even as a child, he knew he wanted to be just like him when he grew up! As soon as he was old enough, Joey attended American Trichology Institute, “A Redken Academy.” Through school he worked as an assistant at a prestigious salon, where he soon converted to behind the chair. His ambition and finesse would soon take him all over as he excelled even more in his craft. Now at XanderLyn Salon, Joey loves the creative energy and working with like-minded and artistic people. He is also thrilled that the salon is a training facility, since furthering his education and maintaining his stance at the forefront is so crucial. “I’m always going to push the envelope on style and be a trendsetter. I’m also a good ear for my clients!” says Joey.

6 Insider Tips for More Fabulous Hair

If your New Year’s resolutions include better hair care (and whose doesn’t?) we have six tips from our XanderLyn – insiders .

1. Hair shouldn’t be styled until dry. When using tools like a round brush, you must completely dry your hair before attempting the proper round brush technique. Think of using a flat iron or curing iron on wet hair — it doesn’t work. It’s actually the same idea with a round brush.

2. Reduce heat on your hair. Try to skip heat products, like blow dryers and flat irons, at least twice a week. If you must use heat, be sure to use a product that has heat protection, such as Keune’s Care Line Phase 2 Spray .

3. Cleanse your scalp. Your scalp is an attachment of the skin on your face. Everyone knows to wash and nourish facial skin, but some don’t realize your scalp deserves the same attention. 4. All blow outs are not created equal. The bigger the round brush, the straighter the hair will get when smoothing. When attempting a blow out at-home, be sure to blow out each section of the hair smoothly because any layer that falls on top of the underneath layer will conform to the rest of the hair.

The year finale is merely days away. Some people will spend the next few days finishing 2017 with a bang and others will be preparing resolutions for the early days of 2018. We talked to our Scottsdale hairstylists for a list of looks sure to make the transition from 2017 to 2018:

Sky High Pony Tails – It’s all about hair fixed very high on the nape wrapped with the strand of tresses, or with some statement ribbon. Such looks are fantastic for several reasons. First, you look young, flirty and ready for some adventure. Secondly, such height and tension totally reveal your facial features, so freely accent eyes and lips. Thirdly, they can be replicated at home!

1920’s Inspired Hair Jewels – Any shiny and glittery band or clip will take your style up a notch. Fashion always re-interprets past decades, that’s why headband hairstyles with a vintage feel will always be popular. After all, the 20’s were ever so fashionable.

Sleek Topknot – Holy chicness! Apply a lightweight gel to damp hair and slick into a high pony. Then split the length of your hair into two sections, twist them together, and wrap into a bun. Secure with bobby pins. Voilla!

At Touch of Velvet – A classic velvet ribbon is a super cute accessory that’s easy to add to any hairstyle. It’s also the perfect grown-up way to wear a bow so you don’t feel like you’re seven.

5 Tips to Keep the Season Healthy & Bright

At XanderLyn Salon in Scottsdale, we like to keep things merry and bright through the holidays (and always)! We know the season is sometimes associated with stress (let’s face it – all the cheer can get overwhelming!), so we found some ultra- easy tips to combat this holiday blues!

1. Keep it on the Rocks. Our team of Scottsdale hairstylists, aka the “The Xamily” would never tell you to skip the holiday cocktails! But the smartest advice we’ve heard is to use melted ice to dilute your cocktail and create more liquid. So order your drink on the rocks and try to avoid a quick buzz—and sip longer before your refill. Use soda water as a mixer for liquor (a cocktail with liquor and club soda is only about 100 calories), and don’t be ashamed to add ice cubes to bubbly. In France, it’s called a piscine. Très chic.

2. Have a Party Food Plan. To make healthy holiday eating easier, eat a small (healthier) snack before heading to a seasonal gathering—going hungry will only make you more likely to overeat later. At the event, scope out the entire menu before deciding what you’ll have. Then opt for the simplest snacks, such as boiled shrimp, veggies and hummus, and fruit, which will probably be the healthiest items available.

3. Re-Gift Calories! Bring the Christmas cookies, boxes of chocolate, and other high-calorie gifts that you receive to the office to share with co-workers. Healthy holiday eating will be easier if you don’t have these temptations at home. If you’re scared your gift of calories will create frenemies at work, check with your local hospital, police department, or fire department about whether it would accept a donation of holiday treats. The team at XanderLyn is also collecting beauty products and food donations this holiday season, so you can even bring us your re-gifts and we will distribute them with a purpose!

4. Use the Weekend to Catch Some Extra ZZZZ’s. Most of us have sleep debt: the difference between the number of hours we need every night (which varies per person) and how many we get. If you feel best after seven hours a night and you get five for three nights in a row during a busy week, you have a sleep debt of six hours (two missing hours for three nights). Erasing that debt requires you to get six extra hours over the course of a few days, but they don’t have to be consecutive, says Epstein. David F. Dinges, Ph.D., the chief of the division of sleep and chronobiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, conducted a study in which participants were restricted to about four hours of sleep for five consecutive nights, then allowed to sleep for 10 hours or more on the sixth night. The researchers found that after the recovery night, participants regained some of their previous levels of alertness and ability to concentrate. So while you should focus on eliminating your sleep debt completely, just one good snooze (a few hours more than you normally need) can give you a fresher start.

5. Give Yourself a Break From the Gym. According to a Gallup poll, the percentage of people who exercise regularly is lower in December than at any other time of the year. So don’t beat yourself up—you’re not the only one who’s too busy for yoga class. However, the goal is to try to stay active in other ways. Speed-walking with shopping bags counts definitely burns extra calories! Add some toning by tightening your core muscles as you vacuum or reach for scattered toys (imagine trying to get your belly button to touch your spine). And most important: Get back into your regular exercise routine once the holidays end.

Team XanderLyn Pampers Fans in Hollywood Style Before New Movie, Wonder

Last week, seven fans of the novel-turned-movie Wonder were able to experience the movie’s opening today in Hollywood style thanks to the team at XanderLyn Salon in Scottsdale. The fans, who are also patients at the Barrow Cleft and Craniofacial Center, were treated to a pampering session complete with haircuts, styles, and makeup.

Ranging in age from 11 to 22, these young men and women were born with different abnormalities of the face including Treacher Collins syndrome, the condition affecting the movie’s main character, August “Auggie” Pullman.

Every artist at XanderLyn Salon donated their time and talent to make this day extra special for their new clients. “We loved the opportunity to work with Barrow and to have the chance to make today an exceptionally wonderful day for these incredible individuals. We are so lucky to inspire people to feel beautiful on the inside and out,” says Gaby Miley, owner and beauty artist at XanderLyn. “As Auggie says in the book, everyone deserves a standing ovation; and, I think everyone deserves a little pampering now and then too.”

The real stars of the day, each patient gave signed Wonder movie posters to their design artists as TV stations FOX, 3TV, ABC15, 12 News and Telemundo recorded the days events at XanderLyn Salon. Accompanied by family and friends, they went together to watch the new film following the makeovers at the salon.

“I’ve never done anything like this before, so it was really an amazing experience for me. I love the way they left my hair,” says Ashley Monjaras, 11, who had her hair styled and makeup done. Ashley was born with an extremely are condition called ablepharon-macrostomia syndrome. Just like Auggie, Ashely also started a news school for fifth grade this year. “I have read Wonder and love the story. I’m so excited I get to see the movie now, especially with my hair curled so pretty.”

Education and technology is key in our modern-world, but especially in the salon industry! It seems that scientific breakthroughs are at an all time high! Which once was good for the hair is no longer. In addition, things that were bad for the hair are now good! How do we ever keep on these new findings? Simply put, the answer is education!! When it comes to hair, it is extremely important to understand:

The composition of hair and what impacts it. Without understanding the composition of hair, it’s nearly impossible to properly prescribe the best hair care and styling regimen that suits our clients needs. Our owner, Gaby Miley, has been an international salon educator for 14 years. She has actually taught thousands of fellow hair stylists the “what”, “why” and “how” behind hair. The foundation of the hair strand itself is one of the most important things for every hairdresser to know and understand.
Client history, but not to be confused with a typical stylist client consultation. We are talking about legitimate client history. In today’s world, we have many parts of our daily regimen that can affect our hair and scalp. For example, medications, supplements, dietary preferences, exercise routines and environmental elements may influence our body, including hair and scalp! Our history also determines how our hair follicles grow. At XanderLyn, we commonly see two people with the same hair color and texture, but similar products affect them differently. This is one example of how a client’s history is crucial.
Science behind products. Packaging is often an attention-grabber. Next, we are captivated by smell and touch. However, the material, scents and feelings aren’t necessarily inline with the science of the hair products. Here’s the reality to this:If it smells good, great! But sometimes the best products don’t have a smell, or the fragrance is understated. If it feels soft and silky, great! But did you know that sometimes this is a bad feeling? Too much of a good feeling could mean a serious breakup down the road, so you want to avoid products that build up and coat the hair. Overtime these “feel-so-good” products don’t actually allow the nourishment that the hair needs.

Part of keeping up with what’s happening in Hollywood is watching events like the Emmys! Which is not a bad thing to do on a Sunday night, as it intertwines entertainment and education! Yes, there is no denying we love this as part of our job!

The “xamily,” aka the XanderLyn family, often looks to Vanessa Johnson, one of XanderLyn’s top go-to artists when it comes to on point Hollywood styles! With years of extensive styling and make up expertise behind the chair, not to mention countless education hours, Vanessa has style and make up wants and needs covered. A very noticeable – and awesome – trend of the 2017 Emmy hair styles is that it is all extremely “salonable”! With our know-how, our hair clients can achieve these looks, along with the right hair tools and products. On the red-carpet, celebrity hair was understated, making it a true “accessory” to their wearable fashion; from fur and rhinestones to matted satins and plastics, shiny, sheer, embroidery! ‘Tis the season for open-toe booties and pumpkin spice latte’s! Yes, the team at XanderLyn Salon is very eagerly welcoming in fall with open arms. In honor of this back-to-school season, we are looking at some of the hottest hair trends for the fall of 2017.

Ready…Set…Go!

1. Lash grazing bangs – Forehead fringe has been very popular this year for both Scottsdale clients and national trendsetters. It is a great option for those seeking a new look without having to change length or color. Our Scottsdale hair stylists are expecting bangs in a variety of shapes and lengths, with an emphasis on the shaggy bang, which will basically be resting on your lashes.

2. A pop of color – We love going bold!! With a team of some of the best hair colorists in Scottsdale, we are especially loving the vibrant pops of color that are trending for fall 2017. From Halle Berry rocking purple strands to Sophie Turner showing off some pink streaks, this fall style will surely make the Scottsdale paparazzi do a double-take! If you’re hesitant about taking this colorful plunge, there are temporary options as well, including shampoo-enhanced colors and clip-on extensions.

3. The 90’s are back – Many fall trends are straight off the runway, circa 1990.

Since launching in 2015, we’ve often been called the best Scottsdale salon. Although that is a huge compliment, we’re hoping to build our brand and also be recognized as the smartest Scottsdale hair salon. After all, part of our mission statement is to create and maintain a culture that upholds the science of beauty, adhere to creativity and innovation, and support collaboration. Some may be surprised to hear that beauty is a science. In our modern world today, science is the foundation for nearly everything, especially the beauty industry. Increased scientific knowledge is what continues to increase technology; at the same time, as the base of scientific knowledge increases, technology advances. At XanderLyn, we constantly investigate how scientific research helps to develop the most effective hair care.

XanderLyn is also committed to employing an elite team of beauty image artists that are industry leaders as well as genuine advocates of living life to the fullest. So, not only are our Scottsdale hair stylists the best in the industry, they are also continually advancing their abilities with advanced education. We know that new trends are at the forefront everyday, and we expect that different styles will be evolving tomorrow, so we are fully prepared to master the future of beauty.

Many new clients ask how XanderLyn Salon came to be. Our founder, Gaby Miley, is the brains and beauty behind our Scottsdale salon. She originally set out to open a small studio for her own clientele. She wanted the ability to break through traditional salon barriers, like being closed on Sundays and Mondays, and have a science-based salon with an emphasis on the best hair products. Once fellow stylists realized what Gaby was doing, they wanted to be part of it. Respected peers immediately realized Gaby was starting something exceptional. By maintaining her ideology and following her passions, coupled with her extremely extensive expertise, it was believed that Gaby would quickly conquer the Scottsdale beauty industry. At first, the idea turned reality was a five-chair hair salon in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. By creating a chic yet welcoming environment and employing an exclusive team of beauty influencers, the demand for XanderLyn quickly increased. To meet the requests of consumers, the salon moved (a few doors down) to a larger location, now offering 14 hair stations and a beauty treatment room.

The future of XanderLyn has no bounds. The team is continuously expanding and evolving in many ways. In addition, the original XanderLyn is currently under construction and will soon be a new endeavor of the XanderLyn “xamily.” We can’t wait to share the details with you soon.
